Please join us for Medicine Grand Rounds on Friday, June 28, 2013 for the presentation titled:

Molecular Causes of Sudden Cardiac Death

By

Arnold M. Katz, MD

Honorary Professor of Medicine and Physiology & Neurobiology

Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center

8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.

Auditorium E, Rubin Building, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center

Co-sponsored by the Section of Cardiology and the Department of Medicine

Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth

Objectives – Participants will be able to:

  1. Understand molecular mechanisms responsible for heritable long QT and related syndromes
  2. Understand molecular mechanisms responsible for stress-induced electrical remodeling (“cardiac memory”)
  3. Know how electrical remodeling increases the risk of sudden cardiac death
  4. Understand unexpected arrhythmogenic effects of cardiac therapy

Arnold M. Katz, MD

Dr. Katz received his MD cum laude from Harvard in 1956.  His clinical training was at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Institute of Cardiology of the University of London with Paul Wood.  He received his research training from his father, Louis N. Katz in Chicago, Christian B. Anfinsen, Jr. at the National Institutes of Health, and WFHM Mommaerts at UCLA.  Dr. Katz’ major research centered on the role of calcium in cardiac contraction, excitation-contraction coupling and relaxation, and the actions of lipids on membrane structure and function.  In 1964 he was among the first to identify tropomyosin as a regulator of the contractile proteins, and in 1974 phospholamban was discovered in his laboratory.  More recently he studied the pathophysiology and treatment of heart failure.  He is currently pursuing a long-standing interest in Medical History.

Arnold M. Katz, MD has stated that he has no financial interests or arrangements in association with this presentation, but may discuss Unlabeled/Off-label FDA approved products such as historical use of generics.

Please join the Department of Medicine in welcoming Dr. Arnold M. Katz to Medicine Grand Rounds.
