For over 500 Years letterpress printing with movable type has been one of the major processes of printing before the advent of the digital age. The Book Arts Workshop offers an introductory orientation session for all new comers to learn the basics of typesetting and press work. The orientation classes are required in order to have access to open studio time.

The session will begin with a brief discussion of the history and process of Letterpress printing. After a tour of the workshop  participants will set a short poem or quotation in type, make proofs on an iron hand press, print multiple copies on a Vandercook cylinder press and distribute their type into the type case. Emphasis will be placed on the proper techniques of setting metal type by hand, press work and the selection of appropriate type faces.

No previous experience is required and all materials and equipment are provided. Be sure to bring a short quotation or poem of no more than 12 or 14 lines. Meet in Baker Library, room 25, Monday evenings from 6:30 to 9. Classes will meet two times for each session.

Registration is required and limited to seven participants. Dartmouth students will receive priority. This is an extremely popular class; register early to confirm your space. If you decide not to attend, please notify us at least one day in advance so other people on the waiting list can take your place.
