The “struggle for Syria” has been a defining element of politics in the Middle East for at least a century. Now Syria is being ripped apart by a war that has already claimed over 100,000 lives. How can we begin to understand what is happening there? What is the uprising in Syria about? How is it related to other events in the region?  Who are the main players? What explains the protracted and increasingly brutal character of the conflict? What outcomes are possible?

Anne Sa’adah holds an A.B. in Social Studies and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard University and is the Joel Parker Professor of Law and Political Science at Dartmouth College, where she has taught since 1984. She has just returned from nearly two years in Beirut, Lebanon, an experience she hopes to capture in a book called Stay Safe: A Personal Account of Lebanese Politics. Her past research, including three books, focused on political development and democratic politics (including democratic failure) in France, Germany, Britain, and the United States.

Admission $10.
