A Special Medicine Grand Rounds as part of the Tenth Annual Great Issues in Medicine and Global Health Symposium: Global Partnerships, Friday, November 15, 2013.

The Health Impact Fund: Making life-saving medicines available for substantial reduction in the global burden of disease, Thomas Pogge, PhD, Director of the Global Justice Program, Leitner Professor of Philosophy and International Affairs, Yale University

Objectives – Participants will be able to:

  1. Outline the major problems with the TRIP regime (Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights);
  2. Describe the Health Impact Fund proposals with the main arguments supporting it; and,
  3. Explain how this proposal can be put to the test and perhaps extended beyond pharmaceuticals.

Thomas Pogge, PhD

Dr. Pogge is the Director of the Global Justice Program and the Leitner Professor of Philosophy and International Affairs at Yale University. He received a PhD in Philosophy from Harvard in 1983 and has taught Philosophy, Political Science, and Ethics at universities around the world. He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science as well as President of Academics Stand Against Poverty (ASAP), an international network aiming to enhance the impact of scholars, teachers and students on global poverty. Dr. Pogge is also a leader of Incentives for Global Health, a team effort toward developing a complement to the pharmaceutical patent regime that would improve access to advanced medicines for the poor worldwide (www.healthimpactfund.org). Pogge's recent publications include Politics as Usual, World Poverty and Human Rights; John Rawls: His Life and Theory of Justice; and Freedom from Poverty as a Human Right.
