Objectives – Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe a partnership model for global health outreach activities
  2. Review the ethical principles of global health volunteer service
  3. Highlight the work that Dartmouth colleagues are doing in Nicaragua, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, and in Haiti

 

Margo J. Krasnoff, MD

Margo J. Krasnoff MD received her medical degree from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth in 1982 on a full scholarship through the National Health Service Corps.  She has had a longstanding interest in caring for the medically underserved.  Dr. Krasnoff completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, and then worked for three years as a solo physician in rural Vermont.  She subsequently specialized in geriatrics and in hospice and palliative medicine.  Dr. Krasnoff was on the faculty at Geisel from 1988 until 1995.   She then worked in an inner-city practice at the State University of New York at Buffalo for six years.  She returned to DHMC in 2001 and is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine.

Dr. Krasnoff recently edited a book:  “Building Partnerships in the Americas.  A Guide for Global Health Workers” for those contemplating health-related work in Mexico, Central America, or the Caribbean.  The book teaches the importance of delivering healthcare in the cultural, political, and historical context in which it is immersed.
