Africa in Transition: American Policymakers Discuss Politics, Security and
Economics in Africa

Johnnie Carson, former Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs and General Carter Ham, former commander of US Africa Command, were America’s leading officials dealing with US policy toward Africa for most of President Obama's first term.  In their first joint appearance since leaving government, they discuss the challenges and successes of promoting democracy across the continent, countering the spread of terrorism in the Maghreb, Sahel and Nigeria, coping with humanitarian crises in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic and elsewhere, the revival of Somalia, the Lord's Resistance Army and the changing economics of private investment and foreign assistance.
