Jeffrey Parsonnet, MD

Dr. Parsonnet attended Princeton University, where he majored in English and wrote his senior thesis on the work of Edgar Allen Poe.  He attended New York University School of Medicine and did his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital.  He did his Infectious Diseases fellowship in a combined Brigham and Women’s/Beth Israel Hospital program in Boston, completing his fellowship in 1985.  He then served as a member of the ID faculty at these two hospitals until his move to DHMC in 1990.  He is currently a Professor of Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.  He has served as the ID fellowship program director from the program’s inception from 1991 through 2010.

Dr. Parsonnet’s major research interest has been studies of staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome.  He was among the first investigators to purify the main TSS toxin, TSST-1, and to identify its mode of action as a staphylococcal superantigen.  He has done extensive work on the epidemiology of TSS, including studies on immunologic susceptibility to TSST-1 and other host factors contributing to development of TSS.  He has also studied factors influencing production of TSST-1 by toxigenic strains of staphylococci.  Other areas of research interest have been novel therapies for septic shock and new treatments for C. difficile colitis.

Dr. Parsonnet is one of our main providers of longitudinal care for patients with HIV infection, following patients at DHMC and at an outreach site in Brattleboro, Vermont.

Jeffrey Parsonnet, MD has stated that he has no financial interests or arrangements in association with this presentation.

Please join the Department of Medicine in welcoming Dr. Jeffrey Parsonnet to Medicine Grand Rounds.
