Please join us for a fascinating conversation moderated by Gretchen Gerzina, Dartmouth’s Kathe Tappe Vernon Professor in Biography, with the authors of two highly acclaimed books from 2013.

Carla Kaplan is the Davis Distinguished Professor of American Literature at Northeastern University. Miss Anne in Harlem draws on Kaplan's thirty years as a white scholar in Black Studies to explore cultural crossovers. The 1920s in New York City was a time of freedom, experimentation, and passion—with Harlem at the epicenter. White men could go uptown to see jazz and modern dance, but women who embraced black culture too enthusiastically could be ostracized. Miss Anne in Harlem focuses on six unconventional women who crossed race lines and defied social conventions to become a part of the culture and heartbeat of Harlem.

Farah Jasmine Griffin is a professor of English and comparative literature and African American Studies at Columbia University. In Harlem Nocturne, Griffin tells the stories of three black female artists whose creative and political efforts fueled a historic movement for change at home as World War II raged overseas. A rich biography of three artists and the city that inspired them, Harlem Nocturne captures a period of unprecedented vitality and progress for African Americans and women, revealing a cultural movement and a historical moment whose influence endures today.
