Objectives – Participants will be able to:

1. Identify the impact of intensive glycemic control and single and dual-blockade of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system on renal outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes

2. Examine the dissociation between surrogate and hard outcomes in several recent trials in patients with diabetic kidney disease

3. Discuss how utilization of newer markers of tubulointerstitial kidney injury and inflammation may improve risk stratification and assist in finding signals of efficacy of new agents

Steven Coca, DO. MS

Dr. Coca is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, CT. He obtained an MS degree in Epidemiology and Public Health from the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 2009.

Dr. Coca is an investigator in the Yale Program of Applied Translational Research, and has active funding and projects related to acute and chronic kidney disease. He received a K23 award from the NIDDK in 2008 and is the PI of a multi-center project (1R01DK096549) to examine the ability for biomarkers to predict progression of Diabetic Kidney Disease in the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) study population. He is a co-investigator in the Translational Research In Biomarker Endpoints in Acute Kidney Injury (TRIBE-AKI) consortium since 2005 and also a co-investigator in The ASsessment, Serial Evaluation, and Subsequent Sequelae in Acute Kidney Injury (ASSESS-AKI) consortium (NIDDK-sponsored UO1 Consortium) to study the natural history of AKI with longitudinal follow-up.
