Dartmouth's Foreign Study program in Philosophy provides a unique opportunity for students to spend a fully credited term abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland, attending the Philosophy Department at the University of Edinburgh. The University of Edinburgh was established in 1583 and played an important role in leading Edinburgh to its reputation as a chief intellectual center during the Age of Enlightenment, with a sterling reputation for its Philosophy Department faculty. Alumni of the university include some of the major figures of modern history, including naturalist Charles Darwin, philosopher David Hume, and a host of famous authors such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Sir Walter Scott. Students on the Philosophy FSP take three courses (PHIL 50, 60, 61). Edinburgh is a a dynamic urban environment and a gateway city to northern Europe. Students interested in participating in the Philosophy Foreign Study Program should contact the faculty director (2015 Fall Term Faculty Director: Professor Susan Brison)
