Objectives – Participants will be able to:

  1. Define the role telemedicine plays in the care of acute care patients.
  2. Discuss the differences between direct to consumer and business to business telemedicine services.
  3. Examine existing successful telemedicine platforms and discuss how they might serve your current patients and medical partners.
  4. Assess and consider future applications of telemedicine in your clinical practice from a medical and financial point of view.

 

Donald J. Kosiak, MD, MBA, FACEP, CPE

Dr. Kosiak currently serves as the eCARE Executive Medical Director for Avera Health, a 31-hospital integrated medical system working across eight states based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA.  In this role, he serves as the chief medical officer of one of the most robust telemedicine programs in the United States. In addition, he has served as the elected Chief of Staff of the Avera McKennan Hospital, a 545-bed tertiary medical center located in Sioux Falls, SD.  Dr. Kosiak continues to serve in the United States Army Reserve as an emergency physician.  He is a decorated officer having served three tours of duty in support of Operation Iraqi and Enduring Freedom.

 Dr. Kosiak also serves as the Chief Consultant for STARR Doc Medical Direction, PLLC.  He brings over 20 years of experience in this ecosystem.  Areas of experience include prehospital medical direction, disaster management and training, EHR adaption, telemedicine consulting, and medicine in austere locations. The company has global contacts and scope of service.

 Dr. Kosiak attended medical school at the University of North Dakota and completed his emergency medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.  In 2010, he earned his Masters of Business Administration with an emphasis in health care management from the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND.  He is board-certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and the Certifying Commission in Medical Management.
