Biography

In addition to his active career as first violinist of the Arditti Quartet, Irvine Arditti has also excelled as an extraordinary soloist.

He has given world premieres of a plethora of small and large scale works ranging from solo violin, to violin and large orchestra, all specially written for him. The composers he has worked with and personally known reads like a musician’s who’s who.

As well as having recorded over 200 CDs with the Arditti Quartet, Irvine Arditti has also built an impressive catalogue of solo recordings, which includes the complete works for violin by John Cage.

His objective has been to promote a violin repertoire similar to the landmark work the Arditti Quartet has done, both in the chamber and orchestral music fields.

In 1999, Irvine accepted the prestigious Ernst von Siemens Music Prize on behalf of the Arditti quartet, which was and still is, the only ensemble ever to receive this. All the other recipients have been individuals.

The complete archive of Irvine Arditti and the Arditti Quartet is housed in the Sacher Stiftung in Basle.

In July 2013, The Techniques of Violin Playing, a book by Arditti and the composer Robert Platz was release by Barenreiter Edition.
