Steve Martin steps away from his zany persona to play the straight man in this poignant love story, based on his best-selling novella. The mixed signals and missteps of modern romance abound as a love triangle forms between a bored salesgirl (Claire Danes) and her two suitors, a 50-something executive (Martin) looking for a playmate, and a young artist (Jason Schwartzman) with many ideas and no plans. Steve Martin calls this tender and perceptive film “Jane Austen for the 21st century.”  D: Anand Tucker, US, 2005, 106m
