In the hands of young Hawaiian ukulele virtuoso Shimabukuro—whose phenomenally fluid finger work combines jazz, blues, funk, rock, bluegrass, classical, folk and flamenco—the tiny instrument attains an outsized musical presence. Since blowing up the Internet nine years ago with his soulful, nearly orchestral version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, this “Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele” has brought mesmerizing solo performances to euphoric audiences around the world.

Funded in part by the Class of 1961 Legacy: The American Tradition in Performance Fund.
