American Ascent documents the first African American expedition to tackle Denali, North America's highest peak and explores the complex relationship many African Americans have with the outdoors. In only a few decades the United States will become a majority-minority nation, as people of color will outnumber the white majority for the first time ever. Yet, a staggering number of these people do not consider the outdoors as a place for them.

In June 2013 nine climbers set out to bridge this “adventure gap,” embarking on a grueling multi-week climb of the 20,327ft Denali. In doing so, they challenged outdated notions of what adventure looks like by changing the face of America's biggest and baddest mountain on the 100th anniversary of its first summit. D: Andrew Adkins & George Potter, US, 2014, 69m
