In order to make sense of his life, a white-collar widower (Jake Gyllenhaal) decides he has to tear it all down: dismantling appliances, smashing furniture and even going so far as to bulldoze his own house in search of a catharsis that never comes. Gyllenhaal gives a career-best performance as his partially heartless character manages to work his way into ours. Jean-Marc Vallée’s (Wild) mastery of tone, black humor and classic rock soundtrack elevates this unconventional meditation on grief. D: Jean-Marc Vallée, US, 2015, 101m
