For millennia, most human lives have been spent enduring extreme poverty, without enough food, medicine, education, freedom to live a decent life. If you were born on Earth in 1980 you had a 50/50 chance of living in destitution. But here's the amazing news: after decades of unprecedented progress, the prospects for eradicating extreme poverty by 2030 are real. Author, entrepreneur, and former senior US Government official, Alex Thier, explains how it can happen, and how you can help solve humanity's greatest challenge.

Alex Thier has negotiated with Afghan warlords, prosecuted genocidal maniacs, fought to eradicate polio, and mobilized the U.S. government to end extreme poverty. These remain works in progress.

The former chief of Policy, Planning, and Learning at the U.S. Agency for International Development and scholar at Stanford University, Alex has worked for the United Nations, Oxfam, the International Crisis Group, and The Pancake Man. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, the LA Times, Foreign Affairs, and Foreign Policy. He has made many appearances on national and international broadcast media including PBS’s Newshour, NPR, the BBC, CNN, and al Jazeera.

Sponsored by the Dickey Center for International Understanding. With support from Penny and Bill Obenshain ’62. Free and open to all.
