Most teacher-training programs require teacher candidates to study findings from the basic science of psychology. The rationale is clear: it would be a working knowledge of children's cognition, motivation, and emotion that would be useful to teachers. Yet in-service teachers report that their training was too abstract and of low utility. In this talk, Willingham will briefly consider why teacher training may not be as effective as it might, and will offer an alternative.
