The images you see are grounded in the Japanese techniques of sumi-e (brush painting), suminagashi (marbling), and tarashikomi (dripping wet in wet).  Kathleen discovered brush painting and calligraphy at a weekend workshop given by Aya Itagaki in 1994.  When the workshop ended, she decided to study with Aya on a weekly basis, a practice she continued for over 10 years, to learn the Japanese brush painting technique  known as sumi-e.   Making use of the spontaneity and energy this type of painting suggests, she began to create her own images, primarily dancers and cats, but a few landscapes and abstracts as well.

Kathleen’s love of painting extends to oils as well as oriental brush painting.  She began with classes and workshops at AVA Gallery and Art Center in Lebanon, NH.   To improve her skills, in 1999 she attended a six week intensive in drawing and oil painting at the International School of Art in Italy.  She returned a year later for a residency which included studying with Lennart Anderson.

Kathy’s paintings are in private collections from Madrid to California.  Her work is carried regularly at Long River Gallery in Lyme, NH.
