Introduction by Prof. Noah Isenberg

This pre-Code romp through Depression-era America brings together a plucky runaway (Claudette Colbert) from the upper rungs of society, and a blue-collar newspaperman (Clark Gable) eager to get a scoop. Much of the comedy takes place on the road, and director Frank Capra keeps things—the high-octane banter as well as the journey itself—moving at a rapid clip. It’s no wonder that the “walls of Jericho” come crashing down, nor that the film was a clean sweep at the Oscars. D: Frank Capra, US, 1934, 105m
