IT'S NOT OFTEN WE GET TO HEAR ABOUT HISTORY DIRECTLY FROM THOSE WHO MADE IT...

Often described as “the father of abortion rights,” Bill Baird is a dedicated, tenacious fighter for the right to privacy and a champion for birth control.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see and hear this American icon, who has dedicated over six decades of his life to reproductive rights. Still fiery at 92, he will join the session via Zoom to talk about his extraordinary experiences as a women's rights pioneer; his battles with the law and the women’s movement; his jail time; the firebombing of his clinic; and his narrow escapes from injury and death.

His win in Eisenstadt v. Baird is one of the most important cases decided by the Supreme Court in the 20th century, and has been cited by every circuit court of appeals on many occasions. Bill will discuss that landmark decision and provide commentary about the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and share his views on current cases involving IVF, mifepristone, and the future of the movement.

This event features a special appearance by Joan Schmidt Green, long-time counsel for Mr. Baird, and will be moderated by Osher at Dartmouth Study Leader Maynard Goldman.
