Sarah Brady (Associate Professor of Flute & Contemporary Music, Boston Conservatory at Berklee) will lead an exploration of extended techniques for the flute. The first portion of the class will be devoted to demonstrating sounds and techniques that are possible on the instrument. Students who play the flute can join in and try these extended techniques during the class and composers will have the opportunity to hear these techniques at both expert and beginner levels. Standard notation will also be discussed.

The second portion of the class will demonstrate these techniques in action. Julia Patterson '24 is in the process of composing a flute piece that employs some of these techniques. There will be a brief conversation about the use of these techniques in the context of this composition. This will be followed by a performance by Clara Schaefer ‘25 of a work by Eve Belgarian entitled Can I Have it Without Begging?. This piece employs a variety of extended techniques and is a thought-provoking work exploring the #MeToo movement and connecting it within a historical context. Here is a link to our guest lecturer, Sara Brady, performing this piece.

Please note that it is absolutely fine to drop in for all, or just a portion, of this class!
