Print Resources
The Office of Foundation Relations maintains a library of print resources for its own use and for consultation by development colleagues at Dartmouth and in the community. You are welcome to use these references in our office during normal business hours. Please call the office first at 646-1257 to let us know you are coming. Although we cannot offer extensive assistance, we will be happy to show you where these materials are located and to get you started.
In addition to a library of current Annual Reports from hundreds of foundations and corporate giving programs, as well as print copies of the Giving Guidelines of many foundation and corporate donors, F&CR subscribes to the following directories:
- The Foundation Directory (the so-called "bible of grant sources," compiled by the Foundation Center), which profiles more than 15,000 of America's most important foundations, indexed by foundation name, subject field, geographic region, names of donors, officers, and trustees, and type of support.
- Guide to U.S. Foundations, Their Trustees, Officers, and Donors, also published by the Foundation Center, which claims to be the only published source of data on all active grantmaking foundations, providing current information on over 46,000 foundations.
- The Corporate Giving Directory (from the Taft Group, another leading publisher of reference works on the philanthropic activities of wealthy individuals, corporations, and foundations) contains descriptions of over 1,000 corporate foundations and corporate direct giving programs in the United States. One especially useful feature is the biographical data supplied for corporate and foundation officers and directors.
- The Foundation Reporter (also from the Taft Group) provides contact, financial, and grants information on the top 1,000 private foundations in the United States.
- The Directory of Corporate and Foundation Givers (the Taft Group), in two volumes, gives more comprehensive information than some of the other directories. Funders are listed alphabetically, with biographical data for more than 30,000 foundation officers, directors, trustees and corporate officers (profiles of individuals include titles; place and year of birth; alma mater and year of graduation; current employer; and corporate, nonprofit and philanthropic affiliations). Most of the foundation or corporate giving program profiles list assets, giving figures, and contributions received for three years, as well as the top 10 grants recently disbursed.
- Annual Register of Grant Support (R.R. Bowker) lists grants made by 3,000 grant-giving organizations, organized by 11 major subject areas -- with 61 specific subcategories. It includes nontraditional grant sources, such as educational associations and unions, as well as grants made by corporate, private, and public funders.
- Standard & Poor's Register of Corporations, Directors & Executives, and Index (S&P) provides information on headquarters location, sales, directors and executives, number of employees, SIC code, and new corporations.
The research library also contains print information on international giving, a few directories of philanthropy for selected subject areas (e.g., environmental grants), and regional state directories.
