Interest in Humanities 2: The faculty of Humanities 2 would like to extend an invitation to those students who missed the opportunity to apply for the Humanities sequence in the summer and who are taking Writing 5 in the fall of 2023. We are eager to create a cohort of students who want to delve into a broad range of works of literature as well as engage with other art forms such as music, visual media, and theater. Please write one to two paragraphs to tell us what you as an individual would bring to the course. Perhaps you already have some familiarity with certain works listed on the Humanities 1 and 2 website and you’re interested in exploring further; or perhaps you’re totally unfamiliar with any of the titles and you simply find yourself intrigued. You may know another language or culture, or you may be someone who has always enjoyed reading literature and/or debating ideas. So tell us something about yourself in about 200 words. Use this space to define what draws you to apply for this course, knowing that we’re looking for a variety of perspectives, approaches, and interests for Humanities 2.
Essay: Choose an extended work—a book, a collection of poetry, a composition, a painting—you have encountered recently that was fascinating, infuriating, beautiful, challenging or otherwise memorable. If it’s a book, it can be fiction or non-fiction and of any genre (e.g., novel, short stories, play, history, philosophy). How and why did the work make an impression on you? What questions did it raise or answer? Why have you selected this particular work for your application to Humanities 2? Your essay should be about 250–300 words. Please use the space below.
