Whereas honor is the reward for excellence and whereas on that account it is customary among all scats of learning that those who stand out most prominently for their manners and morals, their natural disposition, and their grasp of the most profound learning be given the benefit of the greatest praise and honor: We, therefore, the Principal and professors of the Academy of James the King at Edinburgh, by these presents wish to make known that the Reverend Eleazar Wheelock, pastor of the church of Lebanon in the district known there as Connecticut, in New England, has attained the title of Doctor of Sacred Theology, and he has been granted the fullest authority to expound, teach, and profess sacred theology among all men, here and elsewhere, as well as all other privileges, immunities, and rights which arc ordinarily granted to those who arc raised to the summit of the doctorate. As proof of our intent, we have set down our signatures with the official seal of Edinburgh, June 29 in the year of man's salvation 1767.
