What is CRL?
The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) is an international not-for-profit consortium of colleges, universities and libraries that makes available scholarly research resources covering all disciplines. CRL is governed by the major research libraries of North America and is funded by fees, grants and contributions. CRL's collections include more than 5 million items including research materials rarely held in North American libraries. Dartmouth's membership provides faculty, students, and staff access to the collections through Interlibrary Loan and digital delivery.
Collection Strengths
CRL fosters the collection and preservation of hard-to-find research materials in print, microform and electronic formats. Holdings include international and U.S. ethnic newspapers, international doctoral dissertations, scholarly journals, government documents, area studies materials, and a variety of subject collections.
Searching the CRL Collections
Identify CRL materials using BorrowDirect or search the CRL Catalog. You may also browse the CRL topic guides to find out more about collections available to you. A growing collection of online digital materials is also available. Please be aware that not all CRL materials are listed in their online catalogs and databases. A Subject Librarian can help you identify CRL materials that might be useful in your research.
Requesting CRL Materials
Submit a Interlibrary Loan request to borrow materials from CRL. The loan period for CRL materials is six months with unlimited renewals. However, all material may be recalled after two weeks use if requested by another member institution or project participant. Articles are routinely delivered electronically and many other items will be digitized in response to loan requests.
Benefits for Dartmouth Faculty
The Demand Purchase Program meets scholars' individual research needs by acquiring selected materials - foreign dissertations, archival materials, foreign newspapers - not owned by CRL. Researchers may request up to $2,000 in purchases annually by working with a Subject Librarian.
Integrating CRL Materials into Research and Teaching
Contact a Subject Librarian to explore ways to integrate CRL materials into your research and teaching.
