Thomas: "I'll never forget [VJ Day]. It was August. We were playing a baseball game. Wheeler was playing in the championship …. with another team and in about the middle of the game, whistles blew and lights flickered and everything went crazy. We didn't know what was going on. Lo and behold it was VJ night….[People] were running all over the place so we had to stop the game. We were lucky because we were behind,  so we had the chance to replay the game later."
