Winfield Scott Montgomery

Winfield Scott Montgomery, Class of 1878, was born on May 15, 1853 in Fort Adams, Mississippi to slave parents. He only remained there for about ten years because he ran away to be among Union soldiers who told him they came to free the slaves. Before college, he became licensed to teach in Vermont. In the fall of 1873, Dr. Montgomery matriculated at Dartmouth College. He was forced to leave after one year for financial reasons but he returned one year later. While at Dartmouth, Dr. Montgomery earned Phi Beta Kappa honors and was a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa. Winfield Montgomery graduated in 1878. He then became a Professor of Ancient and Modern Languages at Alcorn University in Rodney, Mississippi. He left the University to begin a notable career in Washington, D.C. public schools. In 1890, Dr. Mongomery graduated from Howard University with a medical degree and was licensed to practice in both the District of Columbia and Michigan. He was also the recipient of an honorary degree of Master of Arts (A.M.) in the same year (1906) that his son Wilder P. Montgomery graduated [Ed. Note: Wilder P. Montgomery, the grandson of W. S. Montgomery also graduated from Dartmouth in 1931. He attended the Dartmouth Medical School in 1932.] Dr. Winfield Scott Montgomery died on September 11, 1928 in Washington, D.C. at the age of seventy-five.
