Television
General Scope
To collect materials in Television and Radio to support the Department of Film & Television Studies and any other department which wants to use Television resources for research and teaching. Collecting Television resources especially DVD's gives students the added benefit of leisure time entertainment. This collecting is limited to fictional television on DVD and all other types of resources for television.- Audience
Film and Media Studies has been a part of Dartmouth College for over 20 years. The program has evolved over time from Film Studies to Film and Television Studies to Film and Media Studies. In addition to Film & Media Studies, other departments such as English, Government, Sociology, Anthropology and others use television resources in teaching and research. - Boundaries
The LC call number range for Radio is PN 1991 to PN 1991.9 and PN 1992 to PN 1992.92 for Television. Rauner Library has the collected papers of several individuals who worked in Television. - Partnerships
Outside of Borrow Direct, there are no other partnerships for Television and Radio.
Specific Delimitations to collecting in this subject area
- Languages
The preferred language for this collection is English. However, there are attempts to purchase non-English language programming especially if selected programming originated in another country. We can also select foreign language programming when produced by an American company. The foreign language bibliographers also select television programs in the languages they cover. - Geographical Areas (if applicable)
The collection is primarily limited productions made in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Ireland. There are some programs in the collection produced elsewhere. The foreign language bibliographers augment the collections with their selections. - Types of Materials Collected
The largest parts of the materials collected are books and various media. The resources are on the history of radio and television, offer criticism of television or radio programs or the influence of television on society. We also collect a large amount of television programs of all genres except Reality Television. - Format of Materials Collected
Textual resources are collected in print and electronic while television programs are collected on DVD's. Streaming video is not a good option for Television as it is for Film Studies. - Collective Collections
Outside of Borrow Direct, there are no collective collection agreements for Television and Radio.
