Baker-Berry Library Student Displays

The Dartmouth Libraries are committed to building community, generating curiosity, and creating inclusive and just learning environments. We welcome opportunities to host student-created displays that foster intellectual, social, and cultural exchange. The southwest corner of Berry Main Street, “Berry South,” is the Libraries’ designated location for such displays. Students can request the use of Berry South for displays lasting up to one week.

I want to create a display for Berry South. How do I get started?
If you want to create a display for Berry South, the first step is to complete the required proposal form at least three weeks in advance. Please make your proposal as detailed as possible. One of the requirements is that a faculty or staff member agrees to be your sponsor for the display to guide you on its creation and review its content.

Will you accept my proposal?
Libraries staff will review your proposal while considering scheduling and space availability and how well your proposal aligns with the Dartmouth Libraries’ values by fostering intellectual, social, or cultural exchange. Displays must also respect the tenets of the Dartmouth Community Standards of Conduct

Additionally, displays will provide substantive explorations of their topics, will include a balance of visual and textual materials, and will provide varying perspectives, particularly for controversial topics. Groups and individuals may only create displays on Berry South once per term to ensure a diversity of voices.

Where else can I create displays in the Libraries?
Berry South is the only location for short-term student displays in the Libraries. For larger-scale, longer-term physical or digital exhibits, please see the Curators’ Guide to Library Exhibits. Any displays put up elsewhere in the Libraries, or those put up on Berry South without permission, will be removed immediately.

If my proposal is accepted, what happens next?
If your proposal is accepted, you will have a consultation meeting with Laura Barrett, Head of Teaching & Learning, to review your plan, confirm dates, and clarify roles and responsibilities.
