FAQ’s for printing in the Evans Map Room
For help creating a poster, contact Writing Center for assistance or look at these instructions from Undergraduate Advising & Research.
Poster printing
We have the ability to print large format posters with our plotter. However, there are things we can do, things we cannot do and things you should know before coming to print. Please know that this is not a printing service. We have a large format plotter on which we allow others to print documents.
We no longer print on letter size (8½ x 11), legal size (8½ x 14) or tabloid size (11 x 17). Please use GreenPrint or other sources for printing on these paper sizes.

- You do not need to make appointments for poster printing. We print on a first come, first serve basis. We stop printing at 4:29 pm Monday through Friday.
- You can email your poster to the map room. However, we can only catch the obvious mistakes such as missing images. We don't know what else the poster could be missing.
- When creating your poster, you need to consider the space you have for displaying your poster AND the maximum size at which we can print. You may have 4 by 8 feet of exhibition space, but we can not print a 4 foot wide poster.
We have paper in 2 widths. One roll of paper is 36 inches wide. The other roll is 42 inches wide. Think about making one side of your poster either 36 inches or 42 inches to make full use of the paper. As examples, you can make a poster 36 x 48 or another poster 42 x 56 and use all of the space on the poster efficiently. - We do not print "Proofs" of posters.
- All work must be PC formatted only. Files created on a MAC must be PC formatted before you come. We only have PC's in the Evans Map Room.
- TO CONVERT A MAC POWERPOINT DOCUMENT TO PDF WHILE KEEPING THE SIZE, CLICK HERE FOR INSTRUCTIONS.
-
We are unable to provide software consultation help with your poster. We can only print the posters. Please consult your department’s IT support person for software help, the Research Writing Information Technology (RWiT) Center or the ITC Help Desk located on the 1st floor of Berry Library.
The Office of Undergraduate Advising & Research also offers guidelines for creating a poster. Click here for more information. - Come prepared to print your posters. Make any adjustments before coming to the Map Room. The PC’s in the Evans Map Room are for printing only. We do not have space to allow people to create their posters. The computers in the room are limited to mapping software only. Email the poster to yourself before you come to the map room. That will cut down on the waiting time. Or come with a USB drive to transfer your file to one of our computers. You cannot print from your own computer. You must use one of ours to print your poster(s).
- We have the following software available from which to print: MS PowerPoint, Photoshop CS, Adobe Acrobat Reader and ArcGIS or ArcReader.
- Make your poster PRINT READY and at the FULL PRINT SIZE. Or at least know what size you want to print your poster. Don't just rely on templates. Check the size of the template also.
- If you make your poster a square dimension, you cannot print it as a rectangle. If you make your poster a rectangle dimension, you cannot print it as a square. Squares and rectangles are similar but not the same. White space will be added to the poster to compensate the for change in shape. For example, if you create your poster 48x48, you cannot print it 36x48.
- The cost of your poster depends on the size of your poster. If you do not know the size of your poster, we can not tell you the cost.
- We have only one type of paper: Heavyweight Coated. We charge for the linear or length measurement only. Effective September 1, 2008:
- The cost for the 36 inch wide paper is $6.00 for each 6 inches to the next 6 inches. If your poster is 36 inches by 48 inches long, the cost is $ 48.00.
- The cost for the 42-inch wide paper is $7.00 for each 6 inches to the next 6 inches. If your poster is 42 inches by 56 inches long, the cost is $ 70.00.
- You have 2 options for payment. You can charge a department account or chart string. Bring the chart string number with you when you come to print. You can also pay with a credit card. However, the Evans Map Room does not handle this type of payment. We will tell you the cost of your poster. You will then go down to the Circulation Desk on the 1st floor of Berry Library. The Circulation Desk will take your payment and give you a receipt in return. Please bring that receipt back to the map room as proof of payment. The Library does not accept cash or DASH for payments.

Call us first before you send your students to print. If you have questions, which these FAQs do not answer, please call us at (603) 646-2579 or email us at the Evans Map Room. Do not send emails to individual employees working in the map room. You run the risk of not getting an answer. Many students do not have the basic information we need to print their posters. Call us first so that we can discuss certain parameters for printing with you. If your department is paying for the printing, we can discuss the size, cost and time frame for printing.
