What to Leave Home

There's no need for students to bring additional room furniture from home as all student rooms are equipped with furniture. This furniture must remain in the rooms at all times. Residential Operations does not allow room furnoture to be removed from the room without a documented medical need.

Here is a list of items students should leave at home.

The following items are prohibited from the residence halls due to fire codes, State Laws and College policies.  If these items are found in a student's room, sanctions, include housing and/or life safety fines and disciplinary action, are possible.

  • Pets of all kinds, except fish in a properly maintained tank of 10 gallons or less
  • Microwave ovens, toasters, toaster ovens, rice cookers, hot pots or any other appliance with a heating element
  • Cinder blocks
  • Electric, propane gas or charcoal grill or fuel
  • Candles and incense — For fire safety reasons the Office of Residential Life does not allow any type of open flame
  • Air conditioners
  • Electric heaters
  • Weapons — If brought to campus, firearms must be stored at the Department of Safety & Security
  • Torchier-style halogen floor lamps or halogen lamps of 100 watts or more
  • Any type of loft
  • Flammable liquids or gases
  • 2.4GHz cordless telephones as they interfere with the College's wireless network

Students who have questions about any of the items listed above, or an item that does not appear on the list, should contact Residential Operations at Residential.Operations@Dartmouth.edu or 603-646-1203.
