Room/Cluster Features & Amenities

Most of Dartmouth's undergraduate student rooms are furnished with a twin bed, wooden desk, desk chair, dresser, bookcase, and a closet or wardrobe for each occupant.

Common areas include a kitchen with ice machine and microwave, as well as study and lounge space. These spaces can be used for private studying or get-togethers, as well as for community programs sponsored by the community student staff or other College organizations.

Additionally, residential buildings include vending machines, laundry machines, public phones, and recycling areas. A large custodial staff provides general upkeep of building common areas and public and private bathroom facilities.

Beds, Mattresses & Cots

  • Mattresses are 36 x 80 inches and use extra-long twin sheets. If yours is damaged or defective, please contact Residential Operations at 646-1203.
  • For students who need a firmer mattress, bed boards are available from Residential Operations, located in McKenzie Hall, for a refundable $50 deposit.
  • Students' guests can sleep in relative comfort, at no cost, on cots or cot mattresses. A two-night loan can be arranged at Residential Operations, located in McKenzie Hall.

Kitchens

Common area kitchens are found in every House community and most independent halls. They are generally equipped with basic food preparation and storage equipment such as full-size refrigerators, stoves, microwave ovens, and food storage lockers.

Students are expected to clean up after using the common area kitchens including cleaning all of their dishes. All food should be kept in closed containers and garbage disposed of immediately. Problems should be reported to the custodian.

Laundry

A laundry room is available 24-hours a day on the ground or first floor of each House community, academic affinity, special interest and College-owned undergraduate society or Greek letter organization house.

For laundry issues, contact Automatic Laundry directly. They have a service desk that is staffed 24/7.

Housekeeping

Custodial Services are provided to every residence hall, special interest and academic affinity program unit, and College-owned undergraduate and senior societies, fraternities, and sorority houses. Staff keep the common living areas clean, provide routine maintenance, empty trash, and otherwise keep buildings up to College standards. Custodians are not expected to clean student rooms or excessive messes left in common areas.

Residents in suite or private-style housing are responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms. If bathrooms are not kept in a reasonably clean condition, all residents sharing that bathroom may incur extra-cleaning charges.

Vacuum cleaners are available in all buildings. If you can not find one in your building, your custodian may know where to find one.

Heat

If you are experiencing issues with the temperature in your room, (whether too hot or too cold) please contact Residential Operations at 646-1203.

The heating system in the residence halls does not include a thermostat in every room. Since the temperature cannot be adjusted without affecting many rooms within a building, some rooms will be cooler or warmer than others. The goal, as outlined by the College energy guidelines, is to maintain a temperature of between 65°F and 68°F during the heating season which generally runs from November through April.

Sound Boards

Sounds boards can reduce noise emanating through doors that in the past connected adjacent rooms. Request a sound board by emailing Residential Operations, or by visiting the office located in McKenzie Hall. There is no charge for this service.

Recycling

Dartmouth College is committed to improving the environment. Recycling bins are located in every residence hall, and students are strongly encouraged to make recycling a regular part of their daily routines.
