Joyce Anne Mechling, Thayer ’90

Mechling was the first woman to graduate with a doctoral degree from the Thayer School of Engineering, earning her PhD in numerical modeling of biomedical systems.

LEADING THE WAY

Since graduating from Dartmouth, Mechling has been working with the US Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory as a research engineer in the area of decision analysis and stability operations.

IN HER OWN WORDS

"I never noticed any hostility, never had any unfriendliness. I did notice, though, the feeling of not having a lot of women buddies," Mechling says of her time at Dartmouth. "It was all across the profession. There was that question: Where do women fit in engineering?"
