Student Minimum Wage Increase
Dartmouth announced on March 3, 2023 that the minimum wage for student employees will increase to $16.25 per hour, effective starting March 19, 2023. The Student Employment Office is working closely with our colleagues in Finance to facilitate this change.
Student Hourly Pay Rate Guidance Updated
We have updated our Recommended Student Hourly Rate Structure & Guidelines for Student Wage document (pdf) as a tool for employers striving to set a fair and equitable student wage, effective March 19, 2023. The document includes suggested pay range minimum/maximum for three pay grades.
Updates to the SEO Handbook are forthcoming.
What Employers Need To Do
- Use the updated Recommended Student Hourly Rate Structure & Guidelines for Student Wage document (pdf) to assess what hourly pay rate is most appropriate for each of your
student jobs.
- SEO will update all pay rates currently below the minimum so that they are $16.25/hour in JobX by mid- to late-March.
- Employers who wish to make other changes to their pay rates should enter the edits in JobX as soon as they can. Instructions on how to edit a job's details in JobX are online (pdf). Complete all four steps and ensure that your updated job is sent to Pending Approval Status for review by SEO.
- If you have already created the hire for your student employee(s) to start March 19, 2023 or later in JobX and your pay rate is under the $16.25 minimum rate: No action needed. SEO will update the student employee's pay rate to $16.25 when approving the hire.
- If you have already created the hire for your student employee(s) to start March 19, 2023 or later in JobX and your pay rate is under the $16.25 and you wish to change it to a rate higher than $16.25: Email SEO by March 10 and provide (1) student name (2) Job ID (3) updated hourly pay rate. SEO will update the student employee's pay rate when approving the hire.
- If you have not yet started hiring your student employees in JobX & TimesheetX: Be sure that any future hires you create in JobX are at or above the $16.25/hour minimum wage.

Student Questions
When will my pay change take effect?
The new student hourly minimum pay rate of $16.25/hour will take effect in the first student pay period of Spring Term 2023. That pay period starts March 19, 2023, and ends April 1, 2023. The first pay date in Spring Term 2023 is Friday, April 7, 2023.
I’m already earning $16.25 or more per hour. Will I also get an increase?
While not required, this change in student hourly minimum pay may change a student employee’s pay rate. Employers are expected to review the updated recommended student hourly rate structure (pdf) and adjust their pay rate if their position no longer fits within the guidelines provided.
Will this change in student minimum wage affect my financial aid for this year?
No. Financial aid federal work-study/employment award amounts will not change as a result of changes to the Dartmouth student hourly minimum wage increase.
What is the change to the hourly student tipped minimum wage?
The new student minimum wage for hourly-paid tipped student employees is $7.31/hour.
Employer Questions
My student employees are currently paid at/over the new minimum wage rate. Should I increase their pay rate?

Will my department’s student employment budget be increased to accommodate this change to the hourly student minimum wage?
Overages in the student employment budget for departments currently paying a student hourly wage under $16.25/hour will be allowed for the current fiscal year (FY23). FY24 budget impacts will be reviewed as part of the regular quarterly review process.
If my student’s current position(s) pay under $16.25/hour, will I need to make manual updates to the hourly pay rates in JobX, or will that be done by someone else?

- If you have already created the hire for your student employee(s) to start March 19, 2023 or later in JobX and your pay rate is under the $16.25 minimum rate: No action needed. SEO will update the student employee's pay rate to $16.25 when approving the hire.

Job Listings in JobX:
While we are still working out the details, we expect that SEO will be able to update all hourly rates that are listed below $16.25/hour in the JobX system by mid- to late-March. These rates will be updated to the new minimum wage of $16.25.
If an employer has reviewed the updated recommended student hour rate structure (pdf) and determined that an adjustment to their pay rate to an amount over $16.25/hour is appropriate, they can edit or update a job’s details in JobX using these instructions (pdf). Be sure to complete all four steps to ensure that your updated job is sent to Pending Approval Status for review by SEO.
